Want to Run for Office? Register for the AAOS Candidate Workshop

On September 30-October 1, 2016, AAOS is hosting the 7th Annual Specialty Physician and Dental Candidate Workshop with a number of other physician organizations. This one-day course is perfect for orthopaedic surgeons who are thinking of running for any office, from school board or city council to the U.S Congress. Attendees will learn from the experts about fundraising, building support, using the media, and much more.

Given today’s many health policy challenges, it is more important than ever that individuals who understand and care about the future of medicine are elected to public office. Additionally, physicians already possess many attributes that are attractive to voters: they are well-educated, credible, compassionate, and often small business owners. J. Manuel Arreguin, MD, a candidate workshop alum agrees, commenting that the workshop “was uniquely instrumental in helping me recognize what medical doctors bring to a campaign. Moreover, your workshop made me a believer in reassuring me of the possibilities and the reality of why I must run.”

Fortunately, physician involvement in politics has grown considerably in recent years. Today’s Congress includes 17 physician members, including two orthopaedic surgeons: Dr. Tom Price (R-GA-06) and Dr. John Barrasso (R-WY). Many more physicians are serving their communities through elected office at the state and local level. And any level of public service is important.

Are you next? Participate in Orthopaedic PAC’s Specialty Physician and Dental Candidate Workshop on September 30-October 1, 2016 at the Marriott Marquis, Washington, DC.
